Article: Oil Rig Jobs – Roustabout; An Entry Level Position

A roustabout is the lowest position in the oil rig hierarchy. Although
it sounds like a slang word it is actually an official position on most
oil rigs. Oil rig jobs are tough and can be dangerous, but even at the
lowest level, the roustabout, they can earn you a good salary and be the
beginning of a lucrative career.

Some rigs may not have people in the position of roustabout, and the lowest
position may be the “roughneck”.

Generally a roustabout is the dogsbody in oil rig work. A roustabout will
assist the roughnecks and do all kinds of unskilled manual work on an oil
rig. Although the position is unskilled, it is certainly helpful to have
experience working in similar positions. For example if you wish to work
on an offshore oil rig it would benefit you greatly to get some experience
working on shore in some capacity at an oil drilling rig.

Although the roustabout position is the lowest level job in offshore drilling
work this does not mean that it is poorly compensated. Even at the lowest
level a roustabout can expect to earn $30k-45k or more on an offshore oil rig.

Oil rig work also has the benefit of offering you a lot of leave. A typical
schedule might involve working for three weeks on the rig, and then getting
three weeks leave back on shore. This huge amount of time off means that you
could only be working half the year yet still earn a good, full annual salary.
Some people involved in oil rig work find employment in a second job during
their leave in order to vastly increase their income. Others use the time to
travel, relax, spend time with their family, or party with their friends.

In order to get a job as a roustabout the best way is to have a direct contact
who is already working with a company and who can let you know when positions
are opening and even recommend you. If you know anyone like that, then you
should certainly contact them.

If you do not know any one who can assist you directly you will have to
apply for oil rig jobs yourself. You can find these jobs advertised in newspapers,
on the internet, or any where else jobs can be found.
